Standing Together in the Wake of Tragedy

SAN DIEGO, CA —  In the wake of rising hate-motivated attacks across the country and in response to a specific assault on Jewish community members celebrating Hanukkah in New York this weekend, Alliance San Diego’s associate director Christopher Rice-Wilson issued the following statement:

We condemn hate-motivated attacks against any community member. We are deeply concerned about the rising anti-semitism and divisive rhetoric that has led to a string of attacks against the Jewish community and most recently to the attack of Hanukkah celebrants in New York. In a diverse and truly inclusive society, there is no place for hate by, or against, anyone.

Everyone is familiar with the quote from Dr. King, “an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” However the rest of that quote is where we should focus our actions and it calls for us to stand together in the face of hate and violence: “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”  We call on all community members to stand with the survivors to recognize our shared humanity, practice love, and exercise vigilance to protect one another.
