Alliance San Diego and individual voters filed a lawsuit against the San Diego City Council to protect the power of San Diego voters and the integrity of the electoral process. To help San Diegans understand what’s at stake in this lawsuit, we are hosting a public briefing to explain the circumstances, importance and function of the lawsuit. Panelists include Andrea Guerrero, Alliance San Diego executive director; Christopher Rice Wilson, Alliance San Diego associate director; and San Diego voter and petitioner Isidro D. Ortiz. In March 2020, San Diegans voted in a primary election. After all the ballots were counted, and the city clerk certified the results, the election was over. Yet in April 2021, more than a year after the March 2020 primary election, the San Diego City Council cheated the voters and did something they had never done before – they changed the election results to get the outcome they wanted. This is unprecedented and dangerous election fraud upon the voters. If the City Council gets away with this now, they will do it again – putting voters’ decisions and our democracy at risk.

Election integrity matters. It is a measure of the health of our democracy. Alliance San Diego is the largest voter mobilization organization in the region. Our mission is to build a more inclusive democracy. We engage emerging voters, especially from communities of color, low-income communities, immigrant communities and other marginalized communities. When voters that have long been ignored decide to cast their ballot, they expect that their vote matters and that they decide the outcome of issues on the ballot. But when the San Diego City Council ignores the rules and the election results to make a decision of their own, the Council undermines voter trust and our democracy. Council also sets a dangerous precedent for ignoring voters elsewhere in California.

Because the City Council has refused to back down from this fraudulent effort, we have no choice but to take them to court in order to protect the vote. Alliance San Diego and individual voters, Isidro D. Ortiz and Michael W. McConnell, have filed a lawsuit to stop the City of San Diego from changing the election results.
