Last year, Alliance San Diego offered a non-partisan candidate training program as part of their Neighborhoods Rising Institute, designed to address the growing demand for skilled and knowledgeable candidates. The training prepared underserved and underrepresented community members (AAPI, African-American, Immigrant, Latino, and/or Refugee) to run effective campaigns for elected office in our region. Participants who had thought about running for office to represent their community, but didn’t know where to start, were able to get started in the right direction.
The training took place over 3 days: Friday, January 26 to Sunday, January 28, 2018. More than twenty participants were selected to train with professional and knowledgeable staff from the Wellstone Group and New American Leaders Project, who are leading the charge around the country to prepare underrepresented leaders to be the next wave of change in our region. The training focused on hard skills in core areas such as campaign strategy and management, fundraising, communication and field operations.
