Alliance San Diego recognized by San Diego City Council

 

The City Council today declared 2017 to be a "Year of Solidarity" in San Diego, recognizing community organizations that provide support for a diverse populace. Councilwoman Georgette Gomez said the declaration was especially important in the current political landscape.

"We have policies coming from higher levels of government that target our residents for the color of their skin, for their gender and sexual identities, for their (religious) beliefs and for their countries of origin," Gomez said. "This is not right."

San Diego reacts: New immigration enforcement rules will lead to more deportations, agents — and anxiety

The Department of Homeland Security’s blueprint for cracking down on unauthorized immigrants as ordered by President Donald Trump calls for more arrests and deportations and wider latitude for an increased number of immigration agents.

How that plays out in San Diego County is uncertain. But the release of two memos Tuesday detailing how Homeland Security will enact the changes rattled immigrant communities and activists on both sides of the border, heartened supporters of tougher immigration enforcement and left questions on how new resources will be deployed.

Impact of New Executive Orders and DHS Memos on Enforcement in California

The executive orders issued on January 25, 2017, on immigration and border enforcement, and the accompanying guidance memos from the Department of Homeland Security issued on February 20, 2017, will significantly expand enforcement operations. This will result in many more Californians being detained and deported, tearing families and communities apart, with no solution in sight to fix our broken immigration system.
