Today marks the 13-year anniversary of the death of Anastasio Hernández Rojas, who was tortured and killed by U.S. border agents in San Ysidro in 2010. This past week also marks the anniversary of the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police in 2020. According to the Mapping Police Violence project, local and state law enforcement officers in this country kill more than 1,000 people a year, including in San Diego, and last year was the deadliest in ten years. These figures don’t even include the more than 50 people who die each year during encounters with border agents — people like Anastasio whose family seeks justice in a landmark case.

Alliance San Diego honors Coretta Scott King, a human rights champion who extended the work of her late husband, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Their combined legacy continues to be felt throughout the country. They inspire us to fight for the human rights of everyone in this country.

Dear Members of the San Diego City Council:

In the interest of protecting our democracy, Alliance San Diego urges you to honor the March 8, 2022 decision of San Diego Superior Court Judge Medel and not appeal it. The judge made clear in his decision that the City Council violated the law when it asserted authority it did not have to delay the outcome of an election and then change the rules of the election, ultimately declaring an outcome that was inconsistent with the certified results of that election.
