Did you know that the San Diego Mayor has greater veto power than the California Governor or the U.S. President?

According to the San Diego City Charter, in our Strong Mayor Form of Government, Mayor Kevin Faulconer can not only veto budget items that the City Council has approved, but also move money around to his liking. Only a supermajority of the City Council can override his budget modifications.

Democracy functions best when voters are informed and engaged in the civic process all year long. On June 13, we wrapped up our Spring 2017 Civic Engagement program which did just that: kept voters informed and engaged!

More than 50 residents of National City held a rally Tuesday asking city leaders to pass a resolution to discourage local law enforcement agencies from arresting people who are in the country illegally.

Alliance San Diego and 31 other organizations have sent a letter to San Diego’s mayor and city council urging them to honor the will of the voters and refrain from scheduling a costly special election in 2017. Voters made clear when they passed Measure L that local ballot measures should be brought in November general elections when the most people vote, not in special elections that serve special interests.

On Monday, June 5th, the city council will vote on a budget and will decide whether to include $5 million for a special election. Alliance San Diego invites you to join us at the city council meeting to make our voice heard: No Special Elections for Special Interests!
