Alliance San Diego engaged over 1 million voters during 2021 Recall Election

SAN DIEGO --  Alliance San Diego’s mission to build collective power to create a more inclusive democracy reached a major milestone recently with the successful engagement of over 1 million San Diego County voters in the 2021 CA Gubernatorial Recall election.

The numbers tell the story. Today, the California Gubernatorial Recall Election results will be certified. According to the San Diego Registrar of Voters, 60% of voters in San Diego County participated in the election. That is 2 points higher than the statewide turnout and 8 points higher than Los Angeles. With the second largest number of votes cast in the recall, San Diego County played a major role in the outcome of the election during a global pandemic, economic uncertainty, and ongoing social and political threats to democracy.

ASD activated a digital and social media voter education campaign two weeks prior to election day designed to ensure that voters from across San Diego County including low-propensity voters, voters of color, and low-income voters were aware of voter resources, balloting processes, and polling locations. The campaign included communications strategies like mailers, social media ads, pre-roll Youtube ads, pre-recorded calls, and press conferences with messages drawn from our elections page to reach over 1 million people in the county.

A few highlights from Alliance San Diego’s digital voter engagement during the 2021 Recall Election by the numbers:

  • Over 1 million people reached across San Diego County.
  • Over 5 million impressions across our social media ads.
  • Those who saw our social media ads, saw them on average 4.7 times within two weeks before the election.
  • Over 24,000 clicks-thrus to sdvote.com from Alliance San Diego social media ads and posts regarding the special election.

Alliance San Diego is committed to engaging and educating voters to increase participation and representation in building an inclusive democracy. The stakes are high and our democracy depends on all of us.

Christopher Rice-Wilson, associate director of Alliance San Diego said:

“Voting in the current environment is a mish-mash of process and methods. People are not aware of all the changes instituted due to the COVID 19 pandemic, modernization of our election process and new platforms. Our non-partisan work is critical to create awareness and motivate eligible voters to be a part of the decision-making at election time.”
