33rd Annual All Peoples Celebration,

Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

THIS YEAR’S THEME: PERSIST

Though our quest for freedom has borne much fruit, we still face daunting uncertainty. The pandemic has laid bare and amplified historical traumas and years of exploitation that impact our health, economic stability and freedom. Our society appears to be a wilderness of unrest, racism, hatred, and death.

And while elections make a difference, no one election has ever granted us salvation nor has it been our demise. There has never been a time when we didn’t have to fight or resist. There has never been a time when we didn’t have to rise up against the injustices around us. Were it not for the persistence of our ancestors to keep fighting in the face of danger, in the face of despair; we would not be here. We would dare not hope.

But hope we shall. Now is not the time to surrender. No candidate, no party, no celebrity—no one—is going to hand us the freedom we need to achieve racial justice and economic equality. That freedom only comes through our will to persist - persistent revolt, persistent agitation, and persistently rising up against the system of evil.
