We Are Powerful Together: Q&A with David Miles, Board President

As we enter the fourth week of our annual “I Have a Voice” giving campaign, we are reminded that our voices are a powerful medium to bring about change. Whether it’s a protest or a community forum, it’s important for us to speak up loudly about issues that affect our community.

Alliance San Diego board president, David Miles, knows this all too well. Besides being a philanthropist in San Diego, he has dedicated the last few years of his life to help bring about lasting change in our communities via Alliance San Diego. That’s why he’s pledging to match your donations for this week only to help us reach our goal of $50,000 by May 1st. In a recent Q&A session, David shared his passion for Alliance San Diego and why he is doubling your contribution.

Q: Why did you decide to become a board member of Alliance San Diego?

A: I was thrilled and honored to be asked to join the board of Alliance San Diego in 2010 because it would not only let my voice be known but it would give me the opportunity to know new voices from our broad, diverse community. By that time, I had been in professional and volunteer positions where I was able to contribute ideas and work to achieve the goals of organizations and community groups. Contributing my voice to those successes was meaningful but what I learned from listening to and coming to know the voices of others was an even greater reward. Serving on the Alliance San Diego board of directors has given me the great privilege of knowing voices of people who I would otherwise not have the chance to hear. Q: What are one or two of the most impactful things this organization has done?

A: It is hard to single out one or two of Alliance San Diego’s programs as having the greatest impact. Certainly, the Civic Engagement program’s tremendous success at converting low-turnout voters into high-turnout voters is having great impact. But, Alliance San Diego has developed practices of working with other organizations, public institutions, and communities that are also impacting the way other organizations and groups work.

Q: Why do you think people should donate to Alliance San Diego?

A: In the broadest terms, we have a responsibility to address the wide range of issues that prevent people in our community from achieving the success enjoyed by so many of us. As a border community, addressing inequalities in the respect for the human and civil rights of all individuals is a clear priority. Access to affordable, high-quality education, from preschool through university and professional training, is important to me as well.
