A message from the All Peoples Celebration Host Committee Board President, Ashley Walker:

DSCF6751 3At the upcoming All Peoples Celebration, we honor not only Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the vision for change he inspired, but also the actions of everyday people who mobilized for the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and have been mobilizing for change since.

Fifty years ago, in 1965, I was coming of age. As an African-American who had left the dangers of the rural south and gone north for a chance at real opportunity, I knew how precious my voice was and how important it was to use it, to speak up for my family and for a dream. I shared Dr. King’s dream of a more inclusive, more compassionate world, one where I would not have to worry about the color of my skin to be able to go to school, get a job, and most importantly, to vote.

I knew that dream would not become real unless everyday people like me spoke up for change. So I stood side-by-side with people of good will in this country, from all different backgrounds, calling for change. In 1965, the change we sought was a Voting Rights Act that would prohibit discrimination in voting and enforce the right of all citizens to vote. You see, voting was at the foundation of what it meant to be valued, to be counted, to be a part of this country and our democracy. And it still is.

I remember African American men holding signs “One Man. One Vote.” along with signs “I Am a Man,” to appeal for equal treatment. That sentiment has since broadened to include ALL people and has inspired the theme for this year’s All Peoples Celebration: “I Am a Human. I Am The Dream.” And the fight continues.

I invite you to join us on Monday, January 19th at 10 am for the 27th annual All Peoples Celebration. The event will include a seated brunch and an inspiring program that celebrates the actions of everyday people to bring about change.

In this year, which marks the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, we are pleased to have as our keynote speaker, Mr. Ryan Haygood, one of the country’s foremost experts on the 1965 Voting Rights Act and the leading civil rights litigator at the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. He will be joined by local artists and visionaries for an inspiring program.

Please join us for this unifying and uplifting event. Tickets are going fast so don’t delay.
